When Not to Hire a Business Coach!

If I told you that I have spent over $200K in business coaching resources, you would likely think I was nuts.  Honestly, as I look back over the last four years and think about how much I have spent on business support knowing dang well that my nearly 20 years of business experience was more than enough … I have to fight the urge to feel ashamed of myself.

The good news is that I am fighting the urge.  I decided that part of my mission was to meet other business owners where they are and help them get to where they want to be … without spending $200K.  But … if you have that kind of money laying around … happy to plan a VIP day for you.  All kidding aside.

Look.  A business coach can help you make progress faster and build your business more quickly by helping you see where you can improve things, where you can leverage what you already have, and where you need to fill a big gap in your funnel.  This is true and I believe in coaching for this exact reason.  However, a business coach that is giving you their proven step by step process without listening to the lessons YOU have already learned and identified the SYSTEMS you have already invested in is not a business coach, they are snake oil salesmen and women.

So.  The big question is when should you hire a coach to make sure it benefits you and your business growth the most.  Let’s pause a moment and first talk about when you should NOT hire a coach.

Don’t Hire A Coach When…

… you know what you’re doing, have a solid plan, and just need a little time to implement it all. There’s no big need to have an advisor tell you what you know you should be doing. If you find yourself not implementing the right things, or you don’t know what you should be doing first, then getting a coach involved may not be a bad idea.

Often, you’ll find yourself going through a cycle of having a coach to come up with a solid plan, and then going off on your own for a few weeks or even months to put what you’ve learned to good use.

… you don’t have the money for it. A good coach is expensive. If you can’t afford one right now, learn what you can through courses or for free, implement, and start making enough money to be able to afford the coach. Yes, a coach could be helpful at this point, but there’s no need to risk the viability of your business to shortcut this step. Instead, make a budget, and get the coach on board as soon as you can afford it.

Do Hire A Coach When …

… when you feel stuck. If you don’t know what you should be doing next, or you’re comfortably coasting and are ready to take your business to the next level, a coach can be a great addition.

… when you’re feeling unmotivated. There’s nothing like a good business coach to get you excited about what you’re doing. Paying this person is also a good thing. The expense will motivate you to take action and work on growing your own bottom line. This will reap benefits long after you’re done paying your coach.

… when you don’t know what you don’t know yet. This is a tough one. Often, we can’t see the possibilities for our business simply because we don’t know what we don’t know yet. There are plenty of traffic generation strategies, JV opportunities, product funnel options, and the likes we aren’t even considering because we don’t know they are options. This is where a good business coach can be eye-opening. Be ready for some serious mind expansion and explosive growth as you start to work with your coach.

Still Not Sure …

If you are still not sure if you should hire a coach or not let’s get on the phone and talk about it.  My goal is to meet other business owners where they are and help them get to where they want to be the first step is to ask someone else that has been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt.  I have the t-shirts … well a whole closet of them really.  So, let me help you help yourself.

Reach out to me to just have a conversation amongst business owners. Free.  No Obligation.  I will not sell you anything.  I might invite you to a Facebook group to get more free resources or offer you another deeper dive call … but other than that … I’m just going to help you get clarity on whether or not you need a coach.
